Repercussion
Stills from video work, Repercussion.
Repercussion depicts a figure launching a paper boat and is then joined by another body. The two figures pass the boat back and forth until it evidently sinks. The boat here carries significant meaning representing the historical significance of migration as a means of achieving a better life. In the video, my mother and I are the figures depicted that are navigating the boat’s direction. This play symbolizes the intergenerational relationships that exist within the diaspora. Through this symbol, I aim to highlight the complexity of the migrant experience and the connections that exist between the past and present. This video emphasizes the significance of repeating cultural norms, the desire to belong, and our existing knowledge as a means of navigating an unfamiliar environment and hopes of accomplishing our dreams in a new space.
Repercussion & An Apple a Day are videos that are a representation of highlighting the struggles of adapting to a new environment and the difficulties of maintaining a sense of hope and optimism in the face of disappointment. The videos accentuate the importance of repetition in navigating the challenges of diaspora, while also acknowledging the complex emotions and experiences that accompany this process.
Both of these videos have been displayed as a part of my recent exhibition titled Rooted in Between, at the Anderson gallery in Richmond, VA in April of 2023.
